description: If you have a young child like I do, it's never too early to start teaching them about safety. But it's boring, not only for them, but for you. So like anything else, making a game out of it might prove to be the best course. How about coming up with a safety scavenger hunt like we did in our home a few months ago? I'll tell you about ours, and see if you like the idea. Basically, we did it like any other scavenger hunt: we used note cards with clues on them, but the clues were a little different than we normally used. For instance, a bandage was one of the items that needed to be found (not a Band-Aid...that's a brand name!). So instead of describing a bandage as usual, we drew a picture of a knee with a scrape on it, begging for attention. It's elementary that the bandage is needed. On another clue, we said something to the effect of Don't plug anything into me. Let your parents do it. That, of course, was an outlet on the wall. Again: sure, it might be enough just to remind your kids once or twice about the importance of safety around the house, but making a game out of it makes it not so boring, and they can remember it much better, or so I'VE found. The last thing we did that I'd like to share with you involved winter. We all know that ice can be very dangerous, especially if you already have problems walking. As many of you know, having salt in the garage can be a necessary item in cold areas. So we drew a picture of a puddle of ice, and asked for a solution to the problem. That led our child to the salt.
